Update: Teenage suspect arrested for Instagram hate speech

Temasek Polytechnic, or TP, said today it is investigating a student who posted derogatory remarks on social media.

The school said it would consider “disciplinary action” in a 1am statement after screenshots of the Instagram posts, some of which were racially and religiously offensive, surfaced online yesterday. Many of those reporting the posts identified their author as an Interior Architecture and Design student at the school.

The school did not identify the student but said that all posts, made by @wel.sun.s and other accounts with variations on that username, had been taken down.

“TP is aware of and takes a very serious view on the offensive comments made by a student on social media. The student in question has taken down the posts,” the statement said. “TP is investigating the incident, and will not hesitate to mete out the necessary disciplinary action.”

Among screenshots of at least five posts circulating online was one shaming an alleged rape victim.

“Not that I condone rape but if you’re literally PUBLICLY showing off your body for money, YOU ARE A SLUT,” the first message read.

In another, the student detailed a dream about killing Muslims in an office building.

“Not gonna lie it felt fucking great gunning down anyone that’s relatively brown and non chinese looking. And [I swear to god] I even remember my intentions in the dream. To gun down Muslims,” the post read.

Hate speech on matters of race and religion is a crime under Singapore’s Sedition Act.
