A Singaporean teenager is inspiring others to become pilots after becoming the first under-18 female to obtain a recreational pilot license at a newly established aviation school.
After more than three months of training with Aeroviation Singapore, including nearly 100 hours of theory and practical lessons as well as two weeks of flight training in Australia, ITE College Central student Haazeqah Shah, 17, finally obtained her license.
“She has honored us to be our very own first female pilot below 18 to attain her pilot license,” a post published on the school’s Facebook page on Dec. 28 read. It included a photo of Haazeqah shaking hands with her instructor.
“With hard work and determination, dreams do come true. Never underestimate your ability,” the post added. It has since garnered more than 1,000 shares with comments from people congratulating the teen for her achievement, as well as those considering enrolling their children — or themselves — into an aviation course.
“You’ve done ITE proud. Congrats!” Facebook user Fyan Dzeko wrote, referring to the Institute of Technical Education.
“Wow!!! Going to save up for my kids’ plane licence,” a Herman Gonmez said.
Haazeqah told Coconuts Singapore today she is studying Aerospace Technology at ITE and has plans to become a commercial pilot one day.
“Honestly, I’m still overwhelmed by my achievement as I still have much to learn … it all started with the idea of me soaring the sky,” she said.
Aeroviation Singapore was set up in 2018, according to its website, and offers aviation courses for teenagers.
Recreational pilot licenses can be obtained from as young as 15 years old, according to its Facebook post. The training also involves 15 hours of actual flight with an instructor and five hours of flying solo.
“Recreational Pilot’s Certificate is the ideal starting point for Pilot Training. Starting your flight training in a Light-Sport Aircraft is the most efficient and cost-effective route for learning to fly. Whether you’re training for fun or for a career in aviation, your Recreational Pilot Certificate should be your first goal,” its website said. The certificate is recognized as the equivalent of a license.
