So… we were all hyped to hear news of Singapore’s very own Friends-themed cafe, Central Perk, opening at Central Mall in November. And we were in the midst of a nostalgic Friends marathon when the announcement of the cafe’s annual membership program was made.
For $1,000 a year, members will get benefits like priority queues, event bookings, invitations to pre-launch events, and, um, reservations for the ‘highly-anticipated Central Perk couch’.
Yes, you read that right.
It didn’t take long for the incredulous responses to roll in — comments on the cafe’s post ranged from baffled disgust to Friends-themed sarcasm to opinions giving the cafe the benefit of the doubt (although those were few and far in between).
Looks like the cafe owners may be shooting themselves in the foot before their opening. But who knows? Perhaps the other benefits they come up with will sort of warrant the hefty membership price tag (like an appearance by the cast).
