An elderly Singaporean man drowned while snorkeling in the waters off a Malaysian island on Monday, multiple outlets reported today.
Lim Joo Yong, 76, was found floating unresponsive at about 3pm off Redang Island, according to The New Paper. Lim had been on vacation with family and friends aboard a Genting Dream cruise that departed Singapore on Sunday for Thailand, with stops at Redang and the Cambodian coastal enclave of Sihanoukville.
Lim was rushed to an island resort clinic where a doctor attempted to resuscitate him for nearly an hour. Another doctor from the cruise ship arrived and was also unable to revive him.
His body was taken to the Kuala Terengganu Hospital for an autopsy. Lim’s family and friends are there to bring him back to Singapore, Chinese-language newspaper Lianhe Wanbao reported.
Dream Cruises told reporters he died of “medical complications” and is “extending its full support in assisting the family.”
Coconuts Singapore’s messages to Genting Dream Cruises via its website were not returned by publication time.
