Our very own Singapore General Hospital (SGH) has been hailed as one of the top hospitals in the world by Newsweek, receiving high praise for its pursuit of clinical research and outstanding nursing services.

Decided by a panel of doctors, medical professionals and administrators (from across four continents apparently), the publication narrowed down a list of top ten leading hospitals from around the world with help from a global market research and consumer data company.

What they found was that American institution The Mayo Clinic — based in Rochester, Minnesota — is considered top dog thanks to its superb patient support, an educational arm with 57 research centers, and the reputation for specializing in almost every type of medicine at a world-class level. The Cleveland Clinic, with hospitals in the US, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates, made it on the second spot, lauded for its heart and heart surgery program and being one of the largest medical providers in the world.

Then there’s SGH, the British imperial troop cantonment turned hospital that offers affordable healthcare, patient-driven clinical research, and excellent training for students and medical professionals. As the largest and oldest hospital in Singapore (established in 1821), the sprawling campus located in Outram Park consists of in-patient wards, multiple research labs, a postgraduate medical institute and a comprehensive range of medical specialties and services.

Other notable institutions that made it to the top 10: Johns Hopkins Hospital for its advanced clinical research, neurosurgery and child psychiatry; University of Tokyo Hospital for being Japan’s vital medical hub and “trailblazing” department of disaster medical management; and Tel Aviv’s Sheba Medical Center for its medical science and biotechnical innovation.
