Scorching hot days and intense thunderstorms incoming for first half of April

The long weekend last week was fraught with serious thunderstorms (enough to wreck farms and trees in Lim Chu Kang), and the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) expects more of it to come in the next fortnight.

With the cessation of the Northeast Monsoon season comes the start of the inter-monsoon period — one characterized by both warm weather and intense thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. To give you an idea, lightning activity tends to be higher during the inter-monsoon months than the rest of the year.

According to MSS, the first half of April will see short-duration thundery showers, which can be heavy at times in the afternoons and evenings on seven to nine days. Still, it won’t be as wet as the last two weeks of March.

But don’t break out the thick sweaters just yet — April is still considered one of the warmest months of the year. Daily maximum temperatures can go up to 34°C, and on those few dry days, things can really get scorching at around 35°C. On the flip side, the temperature can hit 23°C when it rains for most parts of the day.
