People actually bought US$1250 tissue packets from It’s The Ship on April Fools’ Day

April Fools’ this year has come and gone, but some brands, it seems, are still feeling the effects. (Like when KitKat’s chilli crab chocolate turned out to be real.)

Cruise ship music festival It’s The Ship, which will depart from Singapore’s shores for the sixth year in November, put out a “new product” on April 1, and it was rather unexpected. The tissue packet stamped with the face of a duck (after its mascot, Steve the duck) was tagged with a price of US$1,250 (S$1,695), and promoted as an item that would allow its user to “sneeze with swag,” “be fashionable when you cry,” and “‘chope’ your spot before an office aunty steals your seat.”

Clearly, it was a joke. However, people actually bought it, because the organizers announced a few days later that those horrendously priced tissue packets had sold out. #richpeopleproblems

But before you get all indignant and riled up, those tissues purchased also came with a balcony cabin on the party cruise free of charge. And since the prank “backfired” when people eagerly threw money at It’s The Ship, the festival brand continued on with that marketing gimmick and a couple days ago started offering an “exclusive water bottle” that also comes with a “complimentary” balcony cabin.

Guess a brand’s gotta do what a brand’s gotta do to reel in those customers.

If that got you intrigued, the ship will sail the seas from Nov 13-15 and early bird tickets are available now. The line-up hasn’t been revealed yet, but past party-starters have included Dash Berlin, Showtek, Kaskade, and Basement Jaxx.
