In these stormy few days, our street cats may not have the luxury of finding shelter, and one could have even drowned in a canal on Sunday morning if not for a group of passersby who staged a daring rescue operation.
A Pasir Ris Street 11 resident managed to capture the incident from her flat, where a drenched cat was seen stranded close to the torrent of water gushing along the canal. Fortunately, some passersby were in the vicinity and worked together to save the troubled feline. A man in a cyclist helmet descended down the side of the canal, while another man fed a rope with a life buoy attached to it.
After some cautious coaxing, the cyclist managed to get the cat into the life buoy and eventually, into safety.
The woman who recorded the incident, who The Straits Times identified as Juwita Abdul Kadir, revealed to the paper that she first saw the cat struggling in the water, with only a pipe opening preventing it from drifting away. Not being able to head down herself with young children at home, she screamed for from her window and got the attention of the would-be rescuers.
Mad props to the Samaritans, who remain unidentified even after the ST report about the incident came out.
