Plenty of junk washes up on Singapore’s shores, from plastic waste to fishing nets. But and an entire air-conditioning unit?
That’s what Nee Soon GRC MP Louis Ng found among the close to 400 kilograms of trash he picked up yesterday during a Seletar Island beach cleanup along with fellow Nee Soon constituency MPs K. Shanmugam, Carrie Tan, Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, and Derrick Goh.
“I don’t know if I can be surprised with what trash we can find on our beaches or mangrove anymore. This morning, Team Nee Soon GRC picked up a whopping 381kg of trash on Seletar Island, including lots and lots of plastic, styrofoam, nets, ropes, toys and YES an air con,” Ng wrote online yesterday. He included a photo of himself on the beach, wearing a life vest and posing with the appliance in front of what looks like bags of trash.

The five lawmakers and other volunteers also retrieved old toys, plastic bottles, and styrofoam pieces from the beach before enjoying a kayaking adventure around the island off the northern coast of Singapore.
The cleanup was part of the annual SG Clean Day initiative promoting cleanliness in public places.
