Mother and daughter charged for murder of Myanmar domestic helper in Bishan flat

On Tuesday morning, police were alerted to a case at Block 145 Bishan Street 11, where they found the lifeless body of a 24-year-old woman in a ninth-floor flat.

Myanmar national Piang Ngaih Don was pronounced dead at the scene, with investigators noting multiple bruises on her body. The domestic worker’s employers were arrested the next day — a mother and her daughter who now might face the death penalty or life imprisonment if convicted of murder.

58-year-old Prema S. Naraynasamy and 36-year-old Gaiyathiri Murugayan were charged in court yesterday for allegedly killing the maid at their flat sometime between Jul 25 and 26, Channel NewsAsia reported. No plea was taken from the both of them in court.

This case continues the dreadful trend of murders in the past month alone — a rather astounding volume, considering Singapore’s tight law enforcement. Aside from the Bishan murder, investigations are still ongoing for alleged killings at Lim Chu Kang, Boat Quay, Jalan Besar and Geylang
