In a rather odd incident that transpired in the wealthy vicinity of Sentosa Cove last Friday, a man was seen driving his car straight into the sea.
Fortunately, he was rescued and pulled out of the sunken car. But the bad news for 36-year-old Lim Jin Ping is that he now stands accused of endangering the personal safety of others, The Straits Times reported.
Lim had been seen crashing his car through barriers and plunging straight into the waters at Ocean Drive off Sentosa Cove. This came after he was pursued by Sentosa rangers on motorcycles, but it’s unclear exactly why he was being chased in the first place. One of the Sentosa rangers — Irman Kamarudin — suffered a cut on his right knee in a traffic accident with Lim’s car.
It was super yacht captain David Roberts who dove in and pulled Lim out —his vessel happened to be near the area where the car plunged into the water. According to the 36-year-old’s account to The Straits Times, he was unable to open the doors of the car (which had already sunk to the bottom), so he resurfaced and asked for a rock from one of the curious passers-by. Said rock was then used to break one of the car windows, and Lim was pulled out of the water.
According to Lianhe Wanbao, an eyewitness noted that Lim spoke repeatedly of dying and said “a mermaid” told him to plunge into the sea.
Lim has since been remanded at the Institute of Mental Health and will return to court on Sep 8.
