In a viral clip that made the rounds on Whatsapp over the weekend, a shirtless man was seen frolicking in the waters of Rochor Canal all by himself, until a uniformed man jumped in — not to join him, but to drag him out. As harmless as the scene may appear, it seems what happened before the video was shot was reportedly a lot less innocent.

The 26-year-old man had allegedly molested at least one woman at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes along Ophir Road on Saturday — The Straits Times said he “approached some women in the church and made them uncomfortable with his actions”. So in his hurry to flee the scene, he dived into Rochor Canal and attempted unsuccessfully to swim (breaststroke? freestyle?) away from the law.

Naturally, the police were notified of his actions, and a man in blue jumped in after the alleged perpetrator to apprehend him in the water. TODAY noted that the Singapore Police Force acknowledged it had gotten a call for assistance around 1:27pm on Saturday.

In a statement yesterday, the police revealed that the man was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and subsequently arrested for “using abusive words against a public servant, intentional harassment and drunkenness in public places”.

Investigations are ongoing.
