Man sentenced to 3 weeks’ jail for attempting to bribe driving examiner with $500

In the second court case that has surfaced this month, a 24-year-old man was sentenced to three weeks in jail for attempting to bribe his driving examiner with money in exchange for a license. The first case saw a 41-year-old Chinese national offering $200 to his driving tester for a Class 3 driving license.

This time, Chinese national Li Qi Gang was unrepresented in court on Wednesday (June 21) when details about his offence came to light. During his Class 3 practical driving test on Dec 15 last year, he had fumbled a couple times in forgetting to check his blind spot, failing to look out for oncoming cars and moving past the stop line without halting.

After the 25-minute test came to an end around 4:45pm, Li brought up to the bribe to his examiner, Goh King Seng. He tried to offer the man $500, and repeated his proposition after Goh asked him to clarify. Goh then got out of the car, got Li to follow him to a briefing room at the Singapore Safety Driving Centre, and told Li to repeat his offer, which was captured on CCTV.

Pleading his case, Li said he was not familiar with Singapore’s laws and claimed this was his first and last offence, reports TODAY.

For their bribery attempts, the men in both cases could have been jailed up to five years, fined a maximum of $100,000, or both.
