Wanting to avoid paying the fee for waste disposal at an authorized site, a man simply dumped all the waste he gathered from businesses in Tampines Industrial Park in a public bin center of an HDB block in Bedok.

The 62-year-old man has since been slapped with a $10,000 fine yesterday for illegal dumping, according to the National Environment Agency (NEA). The offender even bribed a cleaner who was manning the bin center at Block 744 Bedok Reservoir Road in order to throw all the waste discreetly.

Between June and October 2017, the self-employed man had collected industrial waste from businesses for a fee, NEA noted. But instead of disposing them at incineration plants, licensed recycling facilities or even the landfill, he dumped them at a bin center serving residential estates, which is considered illegal.

“NEA will not hesitate to take strict enforcement action against those who illegally dump waste,” the agency stated in a press release.

The offender has since been charged under the Environmental Public Health Act, and he could have been fined the maximum amount of $50,000 and/or sent to prison for a year.
