Man arrested for allegedly molesting NTU student following reports of loitering masked intruder

Over the past month, residents at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) dorms have reported an unknown masked man stalking the grounds and attempting to enter multiple rooms on at least three occasions.

It’s recently been revealed that a 31-year-old man was arrested last Friday (Nov 18) for allegedly molesting a female student at NTU’s Hall of Residence 1, reports The Nanyang Chronicle — but it’s unclear if the suspect is the same masked man. According to the police, the man has since been charged with outrage of modesty a day after his arrest. The man is not an NTU student.

Reports of a masked man roaming the Hall grounds had prompted extra cautiousness among students and renewed calls for cameras to be installed at Hall of Residence 1.

On one occasion on Nov 16, a student had a close call with an intruder who entered her room while she and her roommate were asleep. Awoken by the sound of someone near her bed at 5.30am, she said the man immediately crouched down beside her chair when she got up.

After shining her mobile phone at the prowler, he claimed to be making the rounds to check on residents because of a blackout that had occured in the hall due to heavy rain.

“I did not buy his story as a security personnel would never enter our rooms without any permission,” she said to The Nanyang Chronicle. “My instincts told me to get him out of the room as soon as possible without alarming him… because he could have easily grabbed me.”

He eventually left the room after being told repeatedly that she didn’t need any help.

Other students expressed relief that the suspect was caught, but are taking extra precautions in case there are more than one masked intruders roaming the residence grounds.

Just last month, police arrested another suspect at NTU’s dormitory, where a resident was caught recording videos of other male students showering
