The recipe for Singaporean classic Hainanese chicken rice has been pretty much shared time and time again, be it through family, friends or Google.
This recipe, however, gets the viral, polished sheen of Buzzfeed’s Tasty channel. Yes, yes, we’re all way past the stale trend of top-down cooking videos, but man this chicken rice looks delish AF.
But beyond the quirky stylings of a lesson in making chicken rice, the story of its maker Niki Ang and how she grew up eating the dish with her family in Singapore makes it even more interesting. Now a video producer for Buzzfeed in the United States, Ang recalls with loving nostalgia her childhood spent in Singapore, and how food plays a huge part in the “collaborative culture” here.
It makes for an even heartwarming video when Niki casually mentions that she has a wife — a fact that might surprise citizens living in a country that is not too friendly towards the LGBTQ+ community. Ang is happily married with the blessings of her parents, and from the looks of the documented journey, it was a beautiful wedding.
