Here’s a petty Twitter eruption to distract you from the coronavirus.

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore earned praise today for its witty response to a Twitter account’s trolling of the Malay-Muslim community over Halal certifications.

Through the council’s account dedicated to answering queries on Halal establishments in the country, @HalalSG quipped at @SharonLiew86 for refusing to spell the word “Halal” properly by taking the second L out of the word. In response to her (assuming the account owner is a woman), @HalalSG made peace with her but not without mocking the name.

“[Anyways], ok la since u our friend we follow u same-same la. We [don’t want] to use L word [also],” @HalalSG wrote.

“So now we call you Sharon … Ew.”

It has been retweeted more than 1,000 times since this morning.

The parody account, which has mocked the Malay community with expletive-ridden tweets since at least 2018, gave a response that was not quite up to par.

“Not bad leh quite smarts for a malayu,” @SharonLiew86’s tweet read, misspelling Malay.

The exchange began with the account (mistakenly) lamenting that the late American singer Kenny Rogers’ roast chicken restaurants were still not certified “hala” in Singapore. In fact, they are.

The parody account defended itself after being corrected, saying they were not the kind of person to read the @HalalSG Twitter account to know about such things.

And then it got a response from the council, mirroring the troll account’s crass ah lian language.

“Ya la Sharon, Kenny Rogers is Halal-certified oredi. But don’t worry hor, we got your back one. We know you veli busy amoi cos if you free like us you can spell halal with an L like the rest of us oso mah. Corright?” @HalalSG said.

But when @SharonLiew86 refused to spell it properly, @HalalSG gave the epic response that has now boosted its online street credit.

“Tom balek? Balek where? Anw ok la since u our friend we follow u same-same la. We dowan to use L word oso. So now we call you Sharon… Ew,” the tweet read.

Netizens were quick to cheer @HalalSG for its comeback, while some reminded them not to take the troll account too seriously.

“Relax lah kawan-kawan,” @CapedMomma tweeted, using the Malay word for friend. “Sharon is a troll account, it’s just harmless banter.”
