Identified: Man behind series of attacks on SBS bus drivers on New Year’s Eve

Working on New Year’s Eve is tough; driving a bus around on New Year’s Eve is harder; but getting beat up by a passenger while doing all that is just simply the worst.

Three SBS Transit bus drivers were physically assaulted by a Chinese man who boarded their buses along Bartley Road in the afternoon of Dec 31 last year.

The drivers — one operating bus service 93 and the other two operating service 129 — had to get medical treatment and rest for the subsequent two days following the attacks.

CCTV footage of the incident revealed that the commuter had slapped the drivers — but his motivations behind the assault was unclear. Police have since identified the assailant, and a 23-year-old man is said to be assisting with investigations.

“We do not tolerate such uncalled acts of violence against our staff and we take a serious view of such acts,” said SBS Transit in a stern statement regarding the incident.

“The attacks were deliberate and malicious and we will not spare any effort to ensure that the assailant is caught.”
