Goodbye parking coupons: Say hello to a new mobile app that could take over the old payment system

Can’t stand the inconvenience of perpetually having to stock up on parking coupons and perforate enough of ’em to ensure you don’t get fined? A solution may be coming your way, in the form of a new mobile app that automatically calculates parking fees and allows for digital payment.

Developed by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), the Housing and Development Board (HDB) and the Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech), the app will first go on trial among public sector officers from May 16 to June 16 at selected public car parks in the city. Following that, it will be rolled out to the general public to be tested later in the year, reports TODAY.

Some of the app’s features include allowing motorists the ability to choose the parking duration or extend the parking session, payment via credit or debit card, and the calculation of parking fees according to a per-minute basis. Of course, there will still be enforcement officers checking on your digital ‘coupons’ to make sure you’re paying up.

The app is designed to be user-friendly, but for those who are without a smartphone or data plan, alternatives will be explored.

The trial will include over 80 car parks, including 70 URA ones in central areas like Tanjong Pagar and Chinatown, as well as 14 HDB ones in neighborhoods like Bugis and Tiong Bahru. If all goes well, you could be bidding farewell to parking coupons and saying hello to the app, which would be implemented in the 1,150 public car parks that currently require the use of paper coupons.
