The land occupied by 191 private terrace houses at Lorong 3 Geylang will be returned to the state with vacant possession once their current leases expire on 31 December 2020, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) said on Tuesday.

The terrace houses were offered on 60-year leases which started in 1961.

Most of the homeowners have already moved out and are currently letting out the units to foreign workers and other occupants.

In a statement, the SLA said: “As a general policy, leasehold land will return to the state upon lease expiry. This allows the land to be rejuvenated to meet the new social and economic needs of Singaporeans.”

The agency has also assigned a dedicated officer to each owner to guide them through the lease expiry process.

Located close to both the Kallang and upcoming Geylang Bahru MRT stations, the 2.0ha site is slated for future public housing.

As part of the Master Plan to revitalise Kallang, new public housing projects will be built in Boon Keng, Bendemeer and around Kallang MRT station. New private homes will also be developed in Kampong Bugis.

In addition, there will be green spaces, water bodies and new public facilities like the Sports Hub.

“Residents can look forward to a better living environment, more leisure options, new transport facilities and more jobs closer to their homes,” said the SLA.

According to a Channel NewsAsia report however, some of the homeowners are still struggling with where to go after they move out. After living in their houses for decades, they never thought that they will ever need to leave their spacious terrace houses.
