Cyclists who frequent the Changi area, rejoice — for the first on-road bicycle lane (in mainland Singapore, that is) will open in Changi East on April 22. That means bicycles on the both sides of the extended Tanah Merah Coast Road will be able to ride safely next to other vehicles, thanks to the 10km-long, 2m-wide lane.

Sentosa was the first to see on-road cycling lanes when they launched last year.

There will be raised chevron-shaped markings to alert motorists of the cycling lane, as well as red markings to notify cyclists to keep an eye out for turning vehicles. Also, the bicycle lane will be diverted behind bus stops so buses and bicycles won’t cross paths.

These new bicycle lanes will offer an alternate option for cyclists who ride along the 6km Changi Coast Road, as it will close on April 22. But don’t get your hopes up too high, as the Land Transport Authority has said it will focus more on building off-road cycling paths due to rider safety concerns and land constraints in Singapore.
