The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to Block 147, Serangoon North Avenue 1 last night at 7:15pm, where a HDB unit on the second floor was on fire.

The blaze — confined to the flat’s bedroom — was severe enough to prompt the immediate evacuation of 16 residents living “in close proximity and directly above” the burning unit, before an additional 50 people were evacuated from the building. A power outage also hit the entire block, including a coffee shop located on the ground floor.

The fire was eventually extinguished by the SCDF with compressed air foam and a water jet. Two women — one in her 80s and another in her 30s — were conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital after they experienced breathing difficulties. TODAY reported that they’re currently in stable condition.
