What started as an drunken quarrel between a couple turned into a full-fledged rescue operation that lasted for about five hours, as the authorities attempted to pull a man back to safety from a ledge.

Shin Min Daily News reports that the 29-year-old man had climbed out the window of a fourth-storey unit at Block 161 along Simei Road around 10am on Wednesday, following an alcohol-fuelled row with his girlfriend. There, he plopped himself down on the ledge that was less than 20cm wide.

The police arrived soon after, cordoning off an area spanning two basketball courts. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were alerted as well, and rescuers deployed a safety life air pack at the foot of the block as a safety measure.

Throughout the rescue operation, the highly-agitated man proved to be uncooperative, refusing to extend his arms to be pulled to safety. He even stood up on the narrow ledge at one point.

SCDF’s Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team officers soon deployed a rescue net from the roof of the block and rappelled down, while rescuers from inside the unit pulled the man to safety. By that time, it was already 2:30pm.

Police arrested him soon after for attempted suicide.
