The carcass of a dolphin — at least, what appeared to be one — was found lying on a beach at East Coast Park yesterday afternoon. How it got there and its cause of death is unclear, but dolphins are common in waters off Singapore’s southern shore.
According to The Straits Times, both the National Parks Board and the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum have been informed of the situation, and will take action regarding the almost 2m-long body today.
It seems like an increasing amount of marine mammals and reptiles have been found in Singapore waters of late, exposing themselves to risks like ingesting plastic and getting entangled in abandoned fishing nets when they surface to breathe. If you recall, a sperm whale’s 10m-long carcass was seen floating by Jurong Island last July, and a dead green sea turtle was discovered at Pulau Tekukor just last month.
