Within 15 minutes of eating a random piece of bread that had been left on the ground along Lorong Lew Lian, a dog started shaking, retching, and foaming at the mouth.

Not long after, Ludo — an eight-year-old Shelti-Cavalier — died with its mouth filled with a white, viscous liquid. Ludo’s owner believes that her dog died on Nov 16 after eating bread that was spiked with a tranquillizer and left out for pigeons by a pest control company, The Straits Times reported.

Marine Parade Town Council (MPTC) is currently investigating the incident — a pest buster it contracted called Clean Solutions had used spiked bread to cull pigeons the day before, in the same area where Ludo would take its walks. The town council, however, could not confirm the cause of death to Natasha Wilkins, the dog’s owner. This is due to the fact that there was no official autopsy report linking Ludo’s death to the pigeon culling exercise.

“We have since reached out to her and clarified that there may be other factors that could have led to the unfortunate incident. We are investigating this matter with her, together with our pest control operator,” an MPTC spokesman noted to ST.

Prior to the incident, the town council had already put up a notice of the pigeon culling exercise at Block 8 along Lorong Lew Lian, but Wilkins had not been aware of it.

This wouldn’t be the first such case. In 2013, a dog died after eating poisoned bread left out for pigeons by a pest control firm engaged by West Coast Town Council. The firm — which was given a warning back then — is none other than Clean Solutions, the very same one possibly involved in Ludo’s death.
