Crowing chickens ruffle residents’ feathers; complaints lead to euthanised birds

Chickens roaming around in Singapore? Oh hell, no! That was the response of several residents at Thomson View and Blocks 452 to 454 Sin Ming Avenue — they made noise about the noisy free-ranging birds in their area, and the authorities put down the chickens in response.

According to the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA), 20 resident complaints about the chickens were received last year, and most of them were concerned about the noise.

The chickens, which probably came from the surrounding forested area, were ‘humanely euthanised’, said an AVA spokesperson. Apparently, relocation options were ‘not available in land-scarce Singapore’, reports TODAY.

Interestingly enough, most of the residents that TODAY interviewed didn’t seem too bothered by the birds — some even felt disappointed when they heard the news. But others, like a 63-year-old woman, called them a nuisance: ‘The noise and they fly! I can hear them crowing early in the morning… and obviously I don’t like them’.

Looks like they didn’t get the memo that it’s the Year of the Rooster.
