Days after a Chihuahua grabbed online attention for its head accessory, the owner’s daughter outed herself today to explain why the cute dog had been wearing a bag over its head.

No, it has nothing to do with COVID-19, if that’s what you were thinking.

Facebook user Rachel Liaw wrote today that the dog, named Baby, had been wearing the bag to prevent it from licking other dog’s urine when it goes out. Liaw said she got the dog for her mother at least seven years ago and both of them would go out for walks multiple times a day.

Baby would wear the bag, made of “very thin and soft netting,” during these outings.

“My mum has this ‘system’ for quite some time actually, way before covid,” Liaw wrote. “It is a very thin and soft netting, breathable. To prevent Baby from licking other dog’s urine, when they go for walks 3-5times a day.”

Baby first came into the internet spotlight after it appeared in the photo of an article published by local newspaper The Straits Times on April 29. The photo showed the dog walking with its head accessory as the owner cycles behind.

According to Liaw, she was a little anxious about a photo of the dog making it into the article and seemed glad that the photo had garnered generally positive reactions.

“Love positive outcomes. Guess the world is still nice and beautiful afterall,” she wrote at the start of her post.

She said that she and her brother were monitoring online reactions for “attacks” towards the mother and would “kill her joy” if that happens.

She added that the dog doesn’t seem uncomfortable with the bag over its head, or it wouldn’t walk.

Liaw did not immediately respond to Coconuts Singapore’s online request for comment.
