Bishan Park otter gets hook snared near its eye; apparently due to illegal fishing again

The welfare of the 10 darling otters residing in Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park were under ambush once again in an apparent case of illegal fishing — and this time the injury looks a lot more serious than before.

According to regular Bishan 10 monitor Fast Snail, one of the new pups (or as he refers to — ‘Gen2’) was spotted with a metal fishing hook snagged deep in its right eye, barely missing the eyeball. Pictures of the hooked otter was captured by a Yane Kang and uploaded on the Fast Snail Facebook page on Saturday.

Wildlife rescue group Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) were alerted to the incident that same evening, and have yet to locate the otters according to their statement to The Straits Times. Fast Snail sought the help of other agencies including the Public Utilities Board as well as NParks in a plea to prevent more of the incidents from happening.

Snagging a young otter pup in the eye is of course far more lethal than the time when an angler tried to reel one of them in at Kallang River last year. Footage showed that the hooked otter injured its leg, but recovered quickly soon after. We’re pretty sure that this new case will need some human intervention to get the barb safely removed its peeper.
