Gone are the days when the profession of delivery riders were the butt of jokes — apparently, one Deliveroo rider has been raking in mad cash each month.

At 23, Fitri Ismail makes up to $4,000 a month just by sending food to hungry Deliveroo customers, according to this profile piece by The Straits Times.

He brings in that salary by pushing himself to work for 12 hours on each shift, which could be four or five days a week. By carrying out up to 40 deliveries a day, his earnings add up with each successful delivery, on top of his hourly $8.90 wage.

With his monthly earnings, he easily surpasses the salary of other jobs — and he gets to fix his own hours while at it.

The drawback? Not having benefits that a regular employee has — the freelancer doesn’t receive Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions by employers, medical benefits, paid leaves or work injury compensation.

Monthly, Fitri sets aside $200 to top up his own CPF account, and another $1,800 into his savings account. Not an ideal situation for his CPF in the long term, but still, $4,000 each month is serious cash.

Excuse us while we seriously reconsider our career options, and be sure to read more about Fitri’s story on The Straits Times.
