Accident near Yio Chu Kang MRT station sees 3 pedestrians killed, lorry driver arrested

This morning saw a tragic accident on the roads that took the lives of three people. The incident occurred around 9:30am near Yio Chu Kang MRT station, along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, involving a lorry and an SBS Transit bus, Channel NewsAsia said.

Three pedestrians were declared dead at the scene after the lorry reportedly collided into them. The 25-year-old Singaporean male driver, who sustained injuries from the accident, has been arrested for dangerous driving causing death, according to The Straits Times.

TODAY noted that he was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in a conscious state.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed it was alerted to the accident around 9:38am, and extricated two of the pedestrians from underneath the lorry using a rescue lifting airbag.

When ST arrived at the scene, it noted that a traffic light had fallen over as a result of the accident, and the windscreen of the right side of the bus was destroyed. Drain railings on the pavement were also damaged.

Investigations are ongoing.
