About 90 people living on Pipit Road had to flee their apartments in the night after an electric bike caught fire.

The latest e-bike to burst into flames was located along the corridor of the ninth story of Block 94, the Singapore Civil Defence Force said, in the wee hours of this morning. The fire resulted in the area being covered in soot, and two people suffering breathing difficulties who declined to go to the hospital.

“SCDF firefighters extinguished the fire with one Compressed Air Foam Backpack and a water jet, which was used to damp down the affected area. As a result of the fire, the corridor was affected by heat and smoke damage,” SCDF said in its statement.

Residents from nearby flats were temporarily evacuated as a precautionary measure, it added. Several of them had attempted to put out the fire with buckets of water and a fire extinguisher before firefighters, who were alerted at around 8pm, arrived.

The latest e-bike fire occurred despite months of campaigning by the SCDF to create awareness on e-bike safety.

Users should avoid charging their devices near combustible materials, leaving them unattended while charging, charging them immediately after use, and modifying or tampering with them.
A similar incident happened just last month when something that looked like an e-scooter caught fire, spreading throughout a whole flat in Jurong West, killing one and hospitalizing three – including two firefighters.
