4 months’ jail for remorseless NUS law professor who drunkenly assaulted cabby

This assistant law professor just got schooled in his own subject when he was sentenced to four months in prison for his drunken assault on a cabby near King Albert Park back in 2013

43-year-old Sundram Peter Soosay, an assistant law professor at the National University of Singapore, boarded a taxi on Christmas Day, and vomitted in the cab before leaving and walking off without paying the fare when he alighted near King Albert Park.

The cabby, 69-year-old Sun Chuan Hua, confronted his drunken passenger and got a $50 note from him. Things took a violent turn when Soosay jumped Sun from behind, straddling him and rained down punches on the elderly man. He fled after being caught by an eyewitness.

Sun had to be hospitalized following the incident, and had to go on medical leave for 17 days due to his injuries. Reportedly, he is now too afraid to pick up intoxicated passengers in his taxi.

In court, Soosay was convicted and sentenced to jail for punching and causing hurt to Sun, The Straits Times reports. He was also ordered to pay the taxi driver $1,500 as compensation.

The judge noted that Soosay displayed a clear lack of remorse throughout the duration of the case, and did not indicate when he would be compensation the victim. Channel NewsAsia reports that Soosay will be submitting an appeal through his lawyer.
