$10,000 fine for officer who conducted illegal search on computer system for brother in law and girlfriend

In this age of computers, information is available in a few clicks of the mouse. But if it’s classified information, a mouse isn’t enough, you’ll need someone from the inside.

Senior staff sergeant Kang Wei Chian, 40, was the insider approached by his brother in law and his girlfriend, who were doing due diligence on a Tanglin Halt Road flat they wanted to buy and check if at some point the unit was visited by illegal moneylenders.

The good news: No hits on the unit had been recorded and it’s safe to buy.

The bad news: Senior staff sergeant Kang Wei Chian, 40, now has to pay the maximum fine of $10,000 for accessing the police computer system at the Police Cantonment Complex for an unofficial purpose, reports The Straits Times.

That exempts him from bringing a housewarming gift, we guess?

A word to those who want to do a background check on real estate, try doing it the old-fashioned way — ask the neighbours, we hear they like to talk.
