Watch Singaporean artists use ink created from air pollution to paint artworks in Orchard

The Air-Ink pen

For those who haven’t heard of Air-Ink, it’s this nifty invention by Anirudh Sharma (co-founder of Graviky Labs), and it’s the world’s first ink created by collecting soot emitted from vehicles and purifying it into a carbon pigment that can be used to manufacture various types of inks and paints.

So basically, it’s air pollution that’s transformed into ink — and it’s a pretty cool way of contributing to saving the environment.

This is how it’s made.

If you’re wondering how Tiger Beer is involved in this, the company actually launched a project in 2016 where it took Air-Ink to the streets of Hong Kong — and now it’s coming to Singapore, as well as other cities around the globe like London, Berlin, and New York. The initiative features collaborations with up-and-coming local artists in each country, and our little red dot is repped by MessyMsxi (Tan Zi Xi) and ANTZ (Anthony Chong), who will create artworks using Air-Ink.

To check it out for yourself, pop by orchardgateway@emerald on Mar 28 and 29 to watch MessyMsxi painting in action outside the Crate & Barrel store, or head over anytime until Apr 3 for a glimpse of her work. As for ANTZ, he’ll be holding an Air-Ink painting session from 2pm-8pm at Acid Bar on Mar 29 — swing by for a swig of Tiger Beer while you watch the street artist do his thing.
