Malaysian students who made Avengers parody trailer get surprised by director in Singapore

Are you ready for you jaded, cold hearts to be warmed a few degrees in time for lunch? Yes, you are. We are too.

Remember Malaysia’s most cinematically inventive and creative A-level students, who took an RM3 (US$0.75) budget, an iPhone, and Adobe Premier and made the best parody trailer we’ve seen in years?

Of course you do! That trailer was great. Here it is again, in full, to refresh your memory:

A group of 12 Kolej Mara Seremban teenagers recreated the trailer to Avengers: Infinity War scene by scene, frame by frame, with such perfect execution and cheekiness that the clip garners nearly four million views on the original tweet that showcased the video.

Coconuts KL spoke to one of the video’s creators, Aiman, and he told them that the whole thing took less than a week to shoot, and one night to edit. The only thing they spent money on? A box of cereal, for a particularly creative recreation of a rolling battle scene.

Turns out news editors, your family WhatsApp group, and random netizens weren’t the only fans. One particular retweet got everyone’s attention: The directors of the actual movie, the Russo Brothers themselves.

Well, fast forward a couple of months, and the entire group – yes, all 12 of them, were flown down to Singapore for the movie’s premiere. Thinking that they were just on a panel to discuss how they made the trailer, they got the shock of their lives when one of the film’s directors, Joe Russo, suddenly appeared to offer his congratulations and compliments in person.

Russo had been in town last month together with producer Trinh Tran and Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes) Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange, also Sherlock) and Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Who). It had been a great trip except for the time when a local radio deejay inadvertently dropped some spoilers for the movie during a press conference.

Teenage dream achievement: Unlocked.

Sitting down with the kids, he told them that he was impressed with their creativity, and like us — really loved that plate scene that they adapted.

He also called out the cereal inventiveness as being a “fan favorite,” and asked the boys if they were willing to make another trailer for the next Avengers movie, due out next year.

Remaining coy, the students told Russo, “We’ll see.” Always keep them wanting more, guys.
