The pop art scene in Singapore just got a fresh new pep in its step with the debut of a group exhibition showcasing works by some of the best pop artists in Singapore.

With a limited run time from Jan 17 to 22 at the Visual Arts Centre in Dhoby Ghaut, Instant Fame features 40 pieces by local and locally-based names like Billy Ma, Andre Tan, Justin Lee, Stefanie Hauger, Leo Liu Xuanqi, Iskander Walen, and TR853-1 (TraseOne). The free-to-enter event is organized by Orange Gallery Singapore and Utterly Art Gallery.

Expect to see playful, tongue-in-cheek works inspired by modern life and pop culture. For instance, Walen, who curated the exhibition, will display his titular exhibit Instant Fame, an Andy Warhol-inspired acrylic on canvas painting of a can of soup that references the artist’s iconic “in the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes” quote.

As for Tan, he’s influenced by the cultural heritage of Singapore, with his Porcelain Friends acrylic on canvas work that contrasts cartoon characters like Bambi and Mickey Mouse with traditional Asian motifs.

“Pop art is always current,” Walen told The Straits Times. “It’s about very relatable things we deal with all the time.”

“Pop artists have the tendency to have a sense of humor… which is not always the case for fine art,” he added. “We communicate something, but also want people to have a good time.”
