The threat of a hefty fine for violating labor law hasn’t scared former DJ and cupcake kingpin Daniel Ong away from launching another eatery.
The former 987FM talent says he is opening a steakhouse at Serangoon Gardens to recover from losses to another business in the wake of charges that he underpaid foreign workers for over three years at Twelve Cupcakes, which he ran with ex-wife Jamie Teo.
She was fined S$65,000 Tuesday. Ong’s trial has yet to begin.
“Because of the Twelve Cupcakes incident, I lost all my income from my renovation business. Clients pulled out and I basically had no income. So Dan’s Steaks itself is a product of necessity and a product of people egging me on and giving me encouragement,” the 45-year-old entrepreneur told 8 Days yesterday.
“Even though there’s a lot of bad press about me, I think I was pushed in this direction to start this concept and hopefully it does well.”
After removing himself from the cupcake empire in 2016, the former radio host moved on to open renovation company Danwerkz – still operating – and recently closed all three outlets of his Western-style restaurant Rookery, citing pandemic losses.
He plans to open Dan’s Steaks in April after operating it out of his home since May. It delivers steaks, garlic confit, honey balsamic tomatoes, garlic cheese pasta and mashed potatoes.
