Eco-friendly warriors, listen up. There’s a new zero-waste food and lifestyle store — the first of its kind in Singapore — opening in the Upper Thomson area. Amidst all the buzz about the food waste problem and the issue of ugly food here, UnPackt is quite a welcome breath of fresh air.
At the grocery store, you can expect to bring your own containers and bags to bring home purchases such as dried foods and cleaning supplies dispensed from self-serve gravity bins, according to Eco-Business. Fresh fruits and vegetables will also be added to the selection in the future.
Even if you forget your reusable containers, the store has a recycling initiative offering customers containers that have been cleaned and donated by others.
Best of all, you’ll be able to reduce your weekly grocery bill by a smidge — since the products don’t come with packaging, their prices will naturally be lower than that of other supermarkets.
As a social enterprise, UnPackt also works with the marginalized by employing single mothers, senior citizens, and those from low-income families.
So if you’re keen to reduce your use of plastic and help further the zero-waste movement, keep tabs on the UnPackt Facebook page and swing by the Jalan Kuras space when it opens in the first week of May.
