It seems like everyone and their dog has been looking to Rogue of X-Men for hair inspo lately. You know the hairstyle — a centre part, with the front ends in a bold color to frame the face, brought into vogue by celebrities like Dua Lipa and Kylie Jenner. But you know what they say, beauty is pain and bleaching or coloring your hair can leave your scalp a little itchy, and your floor a little more covered with loose hair than usual, amongst other problems. Ignoring these cries of help from your scalp can affect new hair growth, but addressing the root of the problem is easy with TK Trichokare

The Trichological Centre is known for their customized treatments that address all sorts of hair problems and according to them, keeping your scalp healthy is even more important if you’ve bleached or colored your hair, since the scalp has been exposed to chemicals for an extended period of time. This could result in itchy, red rashes known as contact dermatitis if not managed properly. Do these common hair problems sound like something you’ve been dealing with? If yes, it might be time to get your scalp checked, and we’ve also got an exclusive offer for you, our dear readers, so stick around until the end!

We had the opportunity to try out one of their award-winning treatments, and we thought we’d send Nad, resident millennial and the latest (willing) victim of the two-tone hair trend.

She takes us through the treatment here:

I headed to the outlet at Clementi Mall, and was greeted by the scent of lemongrass and calming music. Trichokare specializes in treatments customized just for you, and it starts with a hair & scalp analysis. My consultant for the day was Kim, who ushered us into a cozy little room to fill up a form, and that’s where the fun begins.

With a lens that magnifies up to 200 times, the barcode-scanner-looking-device Kim used gave me quite the close-up of my scalp. Two pictures were taken, and another two would be taken post-treatment — before-and-after shots that would help me see the effectiveness of the treatment.

The diagnosis

From analyzing my scalp, Kim said my hair was quite healthy, but new strands were noticeably thinner than the rest of my hair, a sign that not enough nutrients were reaching new hair follicles, and I started to worry as I had been noticing increased hair fall for quite a while.

Now, according to Kim, losing about 50-100 strands of hair per day is normal, but it’s important that this hair fall is replaced with new, healthy growth. Reasons for hair loss can range from genetics to hormonal changes, even down to things like stress and the type of hairstyle — too-tight ponytails could be your enemy!

Besides the increased hair fall, my scalp had been feeling quite dry and irritated post-bleaching, even though I had only bleached the front parts of my hair. It’s why I had only been washing my hair on alternate days, much to Kim’s dismay. He pointed out that I had dandruff and a waxy build-up around my hair shafts, all of which could stifle new hair growth. He recommended that it was important to wash my hair daily, since it’s easier for dead skin, sweat and sebum to build up on the scalp in Singapore’s humid weather.

The customized treatment

Kim recommended a customised treatment based on my hair and scalp condition. It’s an advanced scalp detox and care treatment that is great for those with a sensitive scalp or thinning hair. According to Kim, regular sessions will encourage regrowth of thicker and healthier hair.

The process starts off with the OxyPeel, an acidic peel that would deeply exfoliate the surface of my scalp by breaking down dead skin cells, while reducing dandruff and regulating sebum. My hair therapist Lisa massaged this into my scalp, explaining that unclogging any congested hair shafts is important for hair growth.

Step two of the process involves the OxyJet. A large machine was wheeled into the room and Lisa picked up an instrument attached to it. She sprayed a jet of cool air to help with the purging of impurities from my scalp, and the peel was left to sit in my hair for 15 minutes.

After that, it was time for a hair wash and boy, was I excited. There’s just something about having someone else wash your hair, and the minty, specially-formulated shampoo was really refreshing. This might’ve been my favorite part too, as I was getting head massages in between rinses and a pleasant, fruity-scented hair mask. This was followed by another round of the OxyJet spray, which would help the scalp to retain moisture by improving the overall scalp texture.

Now that my scalp was squeaky clean, it was time for OxyNutrient, a nourishing ampoule for the scalp applied with — you guessed it — another round of oxygenated sprays. This time however, would involve two different kinds of oxygenated jets, which would increase absorption of the OxyNutrient while the other would pulsate oxygen to the scalp. Lisa explained that this step would help to accelerate my scalp’s cell metabolism and improve blood circulation.

After my hair was nourished, it was time for Photodynamic Therapy, where I had to sit under a fun umbrella-shaped infrared machine that uses laser light technology to support hair regeneration and help to accelerate healing of the scalp. It felt like a warm hug to my scalp — no complaints!

The verdict

10 out of 10, I’d do it again. I could feel that my scalp was immediately less itchy after the treatment. The oxygenated jets made for quite the refreshing experience, and the images of my scalp post-treatment showed that my pores were no longer clogged with the waxy layer removed. At the end of the treatment, they even styled my hair and my head felt lighter. I was also feeling the effects of the treatment after a week had passed, noticing less hair fall in the shower drain, and less dandruff.
