Ditch the mainstream for eclectic flicks at this underground film festival

Forget whatever mainstream movie that’s playing in cinemas now. The Singapore Cult and Underground Film Festival (SCUFF) is where you get to sate your appetite for films that lean towards the eclectic (and sometimes bizarre) end of the spectrum.

Back for its third edition, SCUFF screens four films over one weekend, starting with the Singapore debut of black-and-white horror flick The Eyes of My Mother, a disturbing tale of a daughter who lives out the trauma of watching her mother murdered in front of her eyes.

If action-packed plots are more your style, catch Coffy, a Blaxploitation story about a nurse who embarks on a journey for vigilante justice. Documentary Gimme Danger is another Singapore premiere to look forward to — it chronicles the rock-n-roll lifestyle of legendary band The Stooges in the late ’60s. Oh, and there’s also a Hong Kong crime drama on the line-up. Prison on Fire stars familiar names Tony Leung and Chow Yun Fatt as two men navigating through the dangerous waters of life in jail.

For those who’d like to contribute to the indie, self-funded fest (so that it can keep going), donations are always welcome.

SCUFF 2017 is on from Feb 24-26, various timings at Alliance Française de Singapour. $13/screening.
