Buskers and MRT station employees historically don’t gel well together, but that all changed in 2014 when the Land Transport Authority (LTA) decided that having live entertainers inject life into our daily commute wasn’t such a bad idea after all.
Right now, there are a total of 15 MRT stations across the island where buskers can perform for commuters both interested and indifferent, thanks to LTA’s collaboration with the National Arts Council. FYI, buskers need to audition with them first, should they want to perform.
One of the many buskers who’ve made MRT stations their stage is Chen Qing Ying, a guzheng player who’s performed along the bustling corridors of Jurong East, City Hall and Raffles Place MRT stations. But in a recent video uploaded on YouTube, it’s a little odd that Singaporeans have to be assured that busking is allowed at MRT stations. Without further ado, here’s Chen performing live at Serangoon MRT station… next to a sign that says “LTA Approved Busking”.
