COCONUTS HOT SPOT — CBD peeps, here’s a new watering hole to unwind at for after-work drinks. Housed in a two-storey conservation shop house along Tanjong Pagar Road, The Wall is a whisky and sumiyaki bar that welcomes one and all, regardless of whether you’re a whisky aficionado or amateur.

Step into the dimly-lit space and you’ll be surrounded by 100-year-old brick walls and bottles upon bottles of rare whiskies. You can choose to take a seat by the bar counter for a rowdy good time or head upstairs to recline on luxe leather chairs while you sip on spirits in between quiet conversation. There’s also a closed-door VIP lounge, complete with heavy crimson drapes and a gleaming crystal chandelier, for those who want an evening of complete privacy.

Thanks to The Wall’s sumiyaki menu, food doesn’t take a backseat to drinks here — indulge in a whisky and sumiyaki pairing set (from $49) or chef’s omakase with whisky ($168) for the full experience. The easy-to-appreciate set comes with four sumiyaki dishes, including items like tebasaki (juicy chicken wings flavored with garlic powder) and tsukune balls (made of minced chicken, cartilage, leek and yuzu peel). Should the whiskies prove to be a tad too strong for your palate, mix in one or two drops of distilled water (they’ll provide it) to open up the different flavors.

Other must-try dishes include the grilled dehydrated skate fin with a side of spicy mayo ($18) — it’s reminiscent of dried cuttlefish strips (and just as addictive) — miso nachos with a minced beef dip ($8), and the butter and soyu grilled squid ($18). Desserts at The Wall are just as delicate and carefully plated as the rest of the menu — we’d definitely recommend ending off your meal with a few bites of melt-in-your-mouth warabi mochi sprinkled with mung bean powder.

But back to the drinks. Top notch whiskies come with price tags that go for $14 per glass, and whisky flights start at $37. For whisky beginners, check out the tasting chart for help on deciding what type of flavor profile to go for. Some highlights from the bar’s rare whisky cellar include the Yamazaki 50 years (distilled in 1961 with 150 bottles worldwide), the (Crystal) Black Bowmore 29 years first edition (with only five casks created), and The Macallan 1948 Select Reserve 51 years (with only 366 bottles available). Or if you’d like a break from all that whisky, the menu also offers other spirits and classic cocktails.
