SPRMRKT serves up locally-inspired dishes like lamb with achar and gula melaka souffle at its new Cluny Court space

CBD workers may mourn the loss of SPRMRKT on McCallum Street, but fret not, because the homegrown eatery hasn’t abandoned us — it’s just moved to a new location at Cluny Court (plus there’s always the Robertson Quay space). At the conserved building, the cozy cafe hangs art pieces on its concrete walls as a collaboration with artists from Singapore and around the region every so often.

Of course, it’s not a supermarket without a retail section, and those of you who’ve loyally followed the brand will know its artisanal selections are on point. Here, you’ll find food, beauty, wellness, household, and design items alongside wines and even chef-owner Joseph Yeo’s housemade achar and cuka sauces bottled up for takeaway.

To get more involved with the community, the brand is also launching in June a new series of bi-weekly hands-on cooking sessions at its open concept kitchen. Expect each class to have a maximum of eight people ($100-$150 per person), with Yeo teaching you how to prepare three recipes that you can easily replicate at home.

As for the food, well, we’ve never really been disappointed by the menu at SPRMRKT outlets, and this one’s no exception. Highlights include dishes with Southeast Asian flavors such as the spicy prawn linguine with hae bee (dried shrimps) and belachan ($25), creamy salted egg carbonara ($23), and twice-cooked lamb leg with zesty achar ($28).

Desserts also take similar inspiration from local and regional cuisine, with the likes of caramelized banana and gula melaka soufflé ($18), brownie with salted caramel ice cream and kacang puteh ($16), and matcha red bean tiramisu ($13).

But if you’re just craving a healthy brunch bowl, order the acai and overnight oats ($15), the Asian bean bowl with brown rice, tempeh, and tofu braised in kecap manis ($16), or the slow-braised pork with goji berries on a bed of brown rice ($20). Eggs are also featured prominently on the menu, including all-day breakfast favorites like oven-baked eggs ($22), avocado on toast ($13), and eggs florentine atop organic quinoa cakes ($19).

For a heartier take on dinner, go for meats like slow-roasted kecap manis chicken thigh ($24) and grilled bone-in ribeye with Sarawak black pepper sauce ($38), padded by sides like salt-baked beetroot ($20) and puff pastry onion soup ($16).

Oh, and did we mention the spiked milkshakes ($16)? Yeah, you’d best leave some room in your stomach for the mocha, peanut butter, or cookies and cream renditions.
