At new Mediterranean restaurant Sideways, tapas-style small plates encourage you to bring a dining partner along to share the love (and the calories). Taking up a shop house space in Little India — just a short walk from Jalan Besar MRT — the casual eatery is backed by the same team behind Melbourne-style cafe The Hangar on Arab Street.
Centered around a wood-fired brick oven that was built from scratch, Sideways features cold cuts and dips on its menu, alongside meats, vegetables, and artisanal breads from the oven. They’ve got some eco-conscious initiatives in place here, such as only using stainless steel straws for drinks and growing their own herbs and vegetables on its rooftop garden.
To start off, you’re encouraged to sip on wines ($15 for a glass of sauvignon blanc or shiraz grenache), aperol spritz ($14), campari spritz ($14), or elderflower spritz ($16), which can be paired with snack-size servings ($7 each) of pickled beetroot, cauliflower, or cucumber to cleanse your palate.
If you’re looking to knock back a cold one after a long week at work, try one of the rotating five craft beers from Germany, Australia, the US, and the UK.
From the cold section of the menu, you’ll also find dips like black bean hummus ($8), mint and feta ($9), and smoked eggplant with peppers ($7) to go with sourdough slices ($4), as well as spicy peppers stuffed with cream cheese ($9).
If you’re willing to wait 15 minutes for plates of wood-fired goodness, though, then the warm dishes are where it’s at — greens like grilled garlic asparagus ($8) and roasted artichokes ($9), or seafood such as garlic shrimp ($12) and stuffed baby squid ($13).
To fill up on heartier meats, order the rib-eye steak ($13), roasted lamb with feta ($12), or Spanish pork belly ($11), then round it all up with a dish of grilled talagani cheese with figs ($12) for a sweet, creamy finish.
