Pastas come in flavors like kimchi spice and assam chilli at new cafe Spagtacular

At Spagtacular, the new cafe on South Bridge Road, the pasta-bilities are endless. Okay, we exaggerate, but this place really loves a good plate of sauced-up carbs — it’s doing a pretty extensive list of classic Italian renditions and Asian-inspired versions of the dish.

Stepping into the minimally-decorated space, you’d be forgiven for assuming it’s another average cafe, as the decor isn’t much to shout about. Spagtacular favors function over photo-worthy, which is fine by us, as long as our bellies take a liking to the food.

On the familiar end of the spectrum, you’ll find traditional pastas like aglio olio ($8), bolognese ($13), and carbonara topped with crispy pancetta ($10), as well as a creamy mushroom pasta dish ($12) and a house-made pesto blend ($10) that you can get with bacon ($2), prawns ($3), or salmon ($4).

If you’re a little more adventurous, browse through the five “spagged pastas” and try one tossed with your favorite spices. There’s kimchi spice ($15), a mix of kimchi infused with leeks and green chili, served with crispy pork belly; chili crab sauce ($15), which comes with, er, prawns; and the ubiquitous salted egg ($12) with a side of crispy chicken skin. Otherwise, Mummy’s Assam ($15) will spice up your meal with assam paste chili and fried dory fillet, while The Geylang Serai ($13) is slathered with curry and a sprinkling of fried chicken cubes.

Those who aren’t feeling quite in the mood for pasta can go for mains like pan-seared sea bass ($16) and garlic grilled chicken chop ($12) or pizzas such as tom yum seafood ($16).

Apart from the usual selection of truffle, spam, cheese, and sweet potato fries ($6-$10), sides for sharing take on Asian flavors as well, with items like har cheong gai chicken ($10) and pork bulgogi wrap ($10). But you’ll also find typical “Western” stall options like mushroom soup ($6) and garlic bread ($5) on the menu.

Anyway, with pastas as the main draw, and price tags that are on the affordable side, Spagtacular could come in handy the next time you’re wandering around the touristy restaurants of Clarke Quay, wondering where to have your next meal.
