Taking over the former home of VLV is a new multi-concept space that runs in a parallel, modern Chinese path to its predecessor. But that’s where the similarities end for The Riverhouse, the newest entertainment spot run by 1-Group. It’s housed in Clarke Quay’s oldest building, which is said to have been built sometime between the 1870s and 1880s.
Officially launching today, The Riverhouse’s three concepts include contemporary Chinese restaurant Mimi, alfresco music lounge/bar Yin, and nightclub Yang. Each has its own distinctive decor, but a stylish thread of modern Chinese-inspired flair runs through the trio.
At the second-story Mimi, where rumors swirl about the space being the previous headquarters of the Ghee Hok Society triad, the interiors are classy yet cheeky. The restaurant itself isn’t named after a person, but rather, the Mandarin phrase for “secret.”
In the kitchen, chef Sam Chong takes his two decades of culinary experience to give “forgotten dishes” new life, influenced by Sichuan, Shanghainese, and Mongolian cuisines. It’s currently only open for dinner, but will welcome customers for lunch from Aug 15, as well as host supper and private dinners in Sept.
If you prefer the breeziness of alfresco chillin’, Yin takes over the cozy indoor lounge and outdoor courtyard facing the river, with music performances, bar bites, and cocktails for visitors.
But for the night owls among us, Yang is probably where you’ll find your fellow merrymakers. Touted as “the first international club in Singapore,” a slightly puzzling branding (are not all clubs “international”?) that most likely refers to its music range, the nightlife joint blares the beats of K-pop, Mando grooves, and other Asian hits to get party-goers on the dance floor moving.
