Hidden in an alleyway at Amoy Street is a cosy nook that serves up Mediterranean dishes. To enter Gemmills, find the entrance via Gemmill Lane — and once you step into the dimly-lit rustic space, you’ll be surrounded by walls decked out with photos of 1930s Singapore.
Previously dishing out small bites, the all-day cafe has fixed up a new menu of simple, comfort food, starting with pastries, yogurt and granola for breakfast. Come lunchtime, light options like the quinoa tabouleh salad with Inka-grilled chicken and cauliflower take their place alongside the regular baguettes and sandwiches.
For a heartier meal, get the must-try bowl of lamb lasagna for creamy bites of braised lamb enveloped in gorgonzola and manchego cheese sauce — the portion size is small enough that you won’t feel too gelat by the time you eagerly scoop up the last bits of cheese.
At dinner, you’ll wanna start off the meal with slices of house-baked focaccia paired with a ricotta spread. Then move on to smoked salmon and salami or zucchini and olive pizzettes (basically small, thin crust pizzas) before you chow down on squid ragu and mop up the tomato sauce with house-baked sourdough.
But remember to save space for desserts — the lovely pecan pie filled with a custard of bourbon, maple syrup and golden syrup is highly recommended for those with a sweet tooth. Alternatively, go for the orange cake, a treat that’s fluffy in the middle and satisfyingly crispy on the edges.
Gemmills is at #01-02, 110 Amoy St (enter from Gemmill Lane). Mon-Fri 8am-late, Sat 11am-late.
