Fancy homages to local cuisine are a dime of dozen these days, especially with National Day right around the corner. The usual suspects — chili crab, nasi lemak, salted egg yolk, durian, and such — have been given much love in the past, but people tend to forget about one beloved beverage: the humble teh tarik.
Burger King hasn’t, though. The often disregarded fast-food joint has been trying hard to win back customers with their own local-inspired burgers after their Ultimate Striploin Steak Mushroom Swiss™ got thoroughly slammed. With their Hainanese Tendergrill Chicken burgers and Rendang burgers launched last week to lukewarm reception, perhaps the new Teh Tarik Pie will get Burger King some love.
Of course, we’re not expecting the fast-food chain to replicate the warm, comforting taste of freshly pulled milk tea in a gooey pie, but it’s a good start for a country obsessed with Thai milk tea rather than kopitiam-brewed ones.
Local Twitter celebrity and serial fast food sneak previewer Xavier Lu says it’s good. Maybe this one deserves a chance, Singapore.
