At The Herencia, formerly known as Nan Chiau High School, the whiff of pastries is a daily scent, thanks to new cafe Kura finding its home at the old canteen. It’s not the most accessible, being an office complex far off from the nearest MRT station, but when beautiful bakes call out to you, there’s no way to say no.

The entire place is run by co-working space Crane, so Kura shares the industrial chic unit with fellow newcomer In Bad Company, which is working on dishing out a full menu of lunch and dinner plates to go with its current selection of bar bites, craft beers, and wines.

On the patisserie side, Kura specializes in wallet-friendly cakes and tarts, with small portions below $4, medium ones around $6, and large sizes upwards of $30. For familiar flavors, the Black Forest is a take on the classic confection, layering dark chocolate mousse, cherry compote, and chocolate sponge in a gleaming sphere, while the Earl Grey Tart is a lovely creation made with almond cream, chocolate ganache, cashew bits, and tea-infused whipped cream.

Other highlights include the Key Lime Tart, made zesty with key lime juice and almond cream; Tiramisu, featuring coffee-soaked sponge and mascarpone cream in a little dark chocolate cup; Strawberry Shortcake, a rectangle of fluffy sponge dotted with cream and strawberries; and the Apple Almond Tart, consisting of apple jelly, green apple chunks, and almond cream.

If you’re in the mood for a buttery snack, grab a croissant, scone, or kouign aman to get that mid-afternoon perk-me-up.
