KitKat will debut unusual flavors like chilli crab and salted egg yolk at its pop-up in Singapore

KitKat’s got a pop-up space opening at VivoCity for a week, but that’s not the most exciting bit. The brand is also launching three limited edition flavors made by local patissiers and inspired by local dishes, and they’re strange enough to pique our curiosity.

There’s the chilli crab option, which we hope KitKat goes all out and adds chunks of crabmeat within; the salted egg yolk rendition, which is surprising because the trend has been withering away; and some vaguely-named “kopitiam breakfast” creation that could be an intriguing (or revolting) mix of coffee, kaya toast, and soft boiled eggs. Hmm.

Taking advantage of April Fools’ Day, the company announced the chilli crab version on April 1, when netizens initially brushed it off as a prank. But if you’ve been following KitKat’s dismissal of the ordinary in favor of a turn towards the bizarre, you’ll know it’s been heading in this direction for a while. Like last year, when it dropped strange-sounding flavors in Malaysia — nasi lemak, ice kachang, and durian — which eventually made it across the border to our shores.

Other types of KitKats, including cashew with sea salt, chendol, green tea with cranberry, and milk tea with rose will also make an appearance at the pop-up, alongside the pale pink Ruby chocolate version.
